A fence is a row of repeated sections, so material counts come straight from the length and post spacing. This calculator gives posts (including gates), rails, pickets with a 5% allowance, and a two-bags-per-post concrete estimate.
Method
- Sections = length ÷ post spacing, rounded up.
- Posts = sections + 1 + gates.
- Rails = sections × rails per section.
- Pickets = length ÷ (picket width + gap) + 5%.
Layout tips
Set corner and end posts first and pull a mason's line between them at the top and bottom. Where the fence turns a corner, square it with 3-4-5 on the line before digging. Check your property line and call your local utility-locate service before digging — it is free and required in many places.

Frequently asked questions
How far apart should fence posts be?
8 ft is the maximum for most wood fences; 6 ft gives a sturdier fence in windy areas or with heavy boards.
How deep should fence posts go?
A common rule is one-third to one-half of the above-ground height, and below the frost line in cold climates.
Does the picket count include gates?
No. Gates are built separately; add their pickets based on gate width.
